An Independence with No Freedom
Happy Independence Day to another day without freedom for a woman to stay. It is again a horrid time where, instead of schooling a man, a woman is asked to follow the rules again. The rules are still for us to walk in the dark and not to punish the man who commits a crime in broad daylight. What kind of system is it? Where the perpetrators are roaming free, while the family of the victim is finding a way to believe that "this can't be it". The institutions around the country are setting rules to secure a woman by curtailing her freedom to roam around when it is not even her fault.
A doctor on duty for 36 hours was subject to one of the worst crimes in human history. Yet, it is another story where society will say, "Why did she wear that?" "Why was she out in the middle of the night?" "Why was she alone in a seminar hall at such a time?". A woman committed to her job, saving people's lives, was deprived of it all. It is ironic that in the city where Maa Durga is the deity, these men dared to do the act on her form. Then why do you worship her? If you cannot even respect her kind, it does not matter Where? What? How? Did these things happen? It is essential to consider that they still occur. Why are we still questioned? When it is not us who were the wrongdoers, but pray to this heinous crime. Society! Why can't you teach men how to walk, talk, or act?
Even after the nature and extent of the act, the victim's mental health is now in question; how low can humanity go to STILL question the women AGAIN? The point of justice is to punish the wrongdoer, but what is its use when it will take another 10-20 years to punish them? Power and influence are used by many to tamper with evidence and elongate the time.
There is not much to say; I am just speechless now. Why celebrate 78 years of independence? When women get to hear, "Don't wear that because you will entice men", or "Why do you have to roam around at night? Men are going to be out there every night!" or "Be home by seven because it gets dark and women should not be alone after that time". The freedom we celebrate does not have any relevance if women are taught to behave because, to be very honest, there needs to be fear instilled in all these perpetrators because this crime is no more a problem of women but of the entire society to fight.

ReplyDeleteVery well written. Unless there is law to give capital punishment for rapist, these kind of heinous crime won't stop. Also these kind of cases should be addressed in fast track court. Even juvenile accused should be sent to jail once they attain the age of 18 and should face the trial.
